Hither Hills State Park

Hither Hills State Park offers visitors scenic picnic areas and fireplaces, sport fishing, a sandy ocean beach, playing fields, a playground and a 168-site campground on the ocean. Anglers can fish year-round and obtain permits to fish at night. The unique "walking dunes" of Napeague Harbor are located on the eastern boundary of the park, which also has woodlands filled with Russian olive, oak, shad and pine trees. Bridle paths and hiking, nature, biking and cross-country ski trails are available.

The Atlantic Ocean offers 2 miles of ocean front beach, a 40 acre freshwater lake and the environmentally sensitive "Walking Dunes". The campground offers a park office, camp store, dump station and bathhouse facilities with hot shower. Protected ocean beach open from Memorial Day to Labor Day. Organized recreation program in high season includes family movies, folk & line dancing, children's summer theater, magic shows and various environmental interpretation programs. Additional facilities include playground, ball field, 10 acre scenic picnic area with fireplaces, horseshoe courts, volleyball, tetherball and hiking trails. Phones are centrally located, and the park is patrolled by New York State Park Police. The park maintains a large recycling program.

:: Important Information ::

  • Out of State fees are in effect for this park. 
  • No pets allowed in the park. 
  • All sites have a platform and picnic table and are spaced throughout the park. 
  • There are 4 comfort/shower stations throughout the park. 
  • The permit holder must be 21 years of age to rent a campsite and must be present at all times. Park staff will check ID upon check in. 
  • Each site permits a maximum of 6 people or a single family unit. 
  • One reservation per family in high season (6/13/03 - 9/04/03 and 6/18/04 - 9/9/04).
  • Seven day reservations only in peak season beginning on Friday, Saturday, or Sunday in designated loops. 
  • Each site allows a maximum of one RV and one tent or two tents. Additional vehicles must park in designated areas. 
  • No fires permitted during the high season. In the low season fires must be in a metal container 6 inches off the ground. 
  • Transfer of sites from one party to another is prohibited. 
  • Campers must check in by 9:00 p.m. or risk losing the reservation. 
  • Quiet time is from 10:00 p.m. to 8:00 a.m. and is strictly enforced.

Pets:
Dogs only. Access in certain areas of the park only, on a leash not more than 6 feet: north of Montauk Parkway, East of Napeague Harbor and west of overlook parking. Not allowed in camping, bathing and picnic areas. Not allowed in buildings or on walkways.

Seasons/Hours:
Park is open year round, 7 days a week, sunrise to sunset. Campsites are available from early April to mid-November. Big game and small game hunting are permitted during season.
