| surfers Info: Mecca. The most consistent wave on Long Island, Ditch Plains is the San Onofre of the East Coast, perfect for beginners or longboarders. Expect to get dropped in on, and you'll have a blast. The consistency means absolutely absurd crowds in summer. On a mediocre day, 50-plus longboarders will take to the lineup, turning it into a not-so-good day if you aren't one of them. There are more accidents here than on the streets of New York City. Shifting peaks break over a rock bottom and a reef/point left. Ditch works on any swell, from a southwest to a northeast with northwest winds. Access is almost too easy from the local parking lots. Best tide: any Best swell direction: any Best size: any Best wind: NW Perfecto-meter: 7 (1=Lake Erie; 10=Jeffreys Bay) Bottom: rock reef Ability level: beginner to intermediate Bring your: longboard Best season summer/fall Access: easy Crowd factor: Latge Local vibe: with crowd comes hostilities Bicep burn: 7 (jockeying for position) (1=knee-high Waikiki; 10=triple-overhead Ocean Beach) Poo patrol: 3 (1=clean; 10=turds in the lineup) Hazards: hundreds of longboards |
